Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for greater empowerment and inclusion of women in governance, highlighting the ongoing suppression of women’s voices in leadership roles within Nigeria. His statement, shared on X.com (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, came as he joined the world in celebrating International Women’s Day.
Atiku began his message by praising the resilience, hard work, and courage of Nigerian women, acknowledging their pivotal role in society. He wrote, “On this special occasion of International Women’s Day, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the resilient, hardworking, and courageous women of Nigeria. Women are the backbone of our society and play indispensable roles in our homes, workplaces, and governance. Their contributions to nation-building are immeasurable, and today, we celebrate their strength, determination, and achievements.”
In his statement, Atiku expressed deep concern over the suppression of women’s voices in leadership positions, citing the recent suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as a glaring example. He stated, “It is deeply concerning that in a democratic society, attempts are still being made to silence the voices of women in leadership. The recent suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti is an unfortunate example of such suppression, which undermines the principles of fairness, representation, and gender inclusivity.”
Atiku emphasized the need to encourage and empower women to participate fully in governance, asserting, “Women must be encouraged and empowered to participate fully in governance, not stifled when they dare to lead.”
Concluding his message, Atiku reiterated his commitment to advancing and protecting women’s rights in Nigeria, stating, “A nation can only progress when its women are given the space and opportunity to thrive.”
