Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai, has revealed that his decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not made in isolation but with the full knowledge and blessing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, El-Rufai disclosed that he regularly consults Buhari on major political decisions, including his recent defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
“There are certain people I always seek advice from before making big decisions, and Buhari is one of them,” he stated. “I met with him on a Friday, informed him about my plans, and he gave me his prayers and blessings.”
The former governor also recalled his time in office, emphasizing how he sought Buhari’s counsel on key appointments, including commissioner nominations.
“Even when I was governor, before appointing my commissioners, I took the list to Buhari to ensure none had ever insulted him. He laughed, thanked me, and told me to proceed,” El-Rufai added.
His defection to the SDP has stirred political conversations, with many speculating about its impact on the upcoming elections and the future of APC.
