No More Phones in Class! Anambra Bans Student Phone Use to Boost Learning

Anambra State has officially banned the use of mobile phones by students in secondary schools, empowering principals and teachers to confiscate any devices found on school premises.

The directive was announced by Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, during the Anambra Schools’ Cultural Day celebration in Awka. She emphasized that mobile phones have become a major distraction, negatively impacting students’ academic performance.

“The increasing use of phones during school hours is taking students’ focus away from their studies. To ensure discipline and academic excellence, principals and teachers have the authority to seize phones brought to school,” Ikediugwu stated.

She highlighted Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to education, noting that his administration is investing heavily in improving the quality of learning while fostering discipline among students.

The event also celebrated Igbo culture, with Ikediugwu urging schools to instill traditional values in students. She stressed that Igbo heritage is more than just music and dance—honesty, hard work, and respect for elders are core values that should be upheld.

The cultural festival featured traditional Igbo music, dance, and cuisine, offering students a deeper appreciation of their roots while reinforcing the importance of cultural preservation.
