In response to the recently declared state of emergency in Rivers State, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional police personnel and resources to ensure heightened security. This move is part of efforts to protect lives, safeguard critical infrastructure, and maintain law and order in the state following the suspension of key government officials by President Bola Tinubu.
According to a statement released on Thursday by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the deployed officers will work closely with the Armed Forces and other security agencies to prevent any breakdown of order. The IGP reassured the public that, while citizens have the right to seek legal redress, any unlawful gatherings, protests, or disruptive activities would be met with the full force of the law.
The Nigeria Police Force emphasized that individuals can express grievances through the proper legal channels, but warned that actions such as protests or unlawful gatherings aimed at disturbing public peace would be swiftly dealt with. “Citizens are urged to remain law-abiding, comply with all legal directives, and continue their daily activities without fear,” the statement read.
Security agencies have also warned groups with criminal intentions to stay away from the state, as security forces are fully prepared to take decisive action against any threats to the peace and stability of Rivers State. The statement further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could compromise public safety.
This increased security presence comes after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers on Tuesday, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly for six months. In their place, Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (retd) was appointed as Sole Administrator of the state.
With tensions running high, the police force has vowed to ensure peace and stability while urging residents to continue their daily activities without fear.
