No More Old Guards? Bill to Block Tinubu, Atiku, Obi, Others from Elections Advances in Reps

A controversial bill that could bar political heavyweights like President Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi from contesting future elections has scaled the second reading in the House of Representatives.

The proposed law, sponsored by Rep. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to set a maximum age limit of 60 years for presidential and gubernatorial candidates in Nigeria. If passed, the bill would effectively shut the doors on older politicians seeking to run for the nation’s highest offices.

Key Provisions of the Bill:

  • Age Cap: Anyone above 60 years will be disqualified from contesting for President or Governor.
  • Educational Requirement: Candidates must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree.

The bill amends Section 131 of the Constitution for presidential eligibility and Section 177 for gubernatorial candidates, aiming to promote younger leadership in Nigeria’s political space.

More Legislative Shakeups

Apart from the age limit bill, the House also advanced other major reforms, including:
Alvan Ikoku Federal University Bill – Seeks to upgrade Alvan Ikoku College of Education in Imo State to a full-fledged university.
Mandatory Youth & Disability Representation Bill – Reserves political appointments for young people and persons with disabilities.
Trade & Commerce Bill – Moves trade regulation to both federal and state governments to boost economic activities.
Women’s Reserved Seats Bill – Seeks to increase female representation in national and state assemblies.
Judicial Reforms – Bills to speed up court processes and increase the number of justices in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.
New State Creation Bills – Proposals for the creation of Wan State (North Central) and Gobir State (Northwest).

With these bold moves, the House of Representatives is pushing for a new era in Nigerian politics, sparking debates over generational change, inclusivity, and governance efficiency.
