Breaking Barriers: Deputy Speaker Kalu Backs Seat Reservation Bill to Empower Women in Politics

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called for widespread support for the Seat Reservation in Parliament Bill, a legislative effort aimed at addressing the longstanding underrepresentation of women in Nigeria’s political space.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu emphasized that the bill is not an act of charity but a strategic move towards justice, equity, and national development.

“For too long, women have been sidelined in governance, their voices diminished, and their leadership potential untapped. This bill seeks to change that narrative by dismantling systemic barriers and ensuring our legislative bodies reflect the true diversity of our nation,” Kalu stated.

He highlighted that reserving seats for women in both the National and State Assemblies would create a more inclusive political structure, one that empowers women to play an active role in decision-making processes.

Kalu, who proudly sponsors the bill (HB1349), drew inspiration from the Beijing Declaration, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to gender equality. He expressed concern over the fact that 15 states in the country have failed to produce female lawmakers, with women making up only 3.6% of the Senate and 4.7% of the House of Representatives.

“The road to gender equality is challenging, but this bill represents a beacon of hope. It is a call to action for a future where every woman, regardless of background, has the opportunity to lead and inspire,” he added.

The deputy speaker urged stakeholders to rally behind the bill, stressing that legal protections and affirmative action are critical tools in the fight for equality. “We refuse to accept the status quo. This is about reimagining a future where justice, fairness, and inclusive leadership prevail,” he concluded.
