Nigerians continue to break new ground across the world, excelling in education, technology, politics, sports, and business. Among these trailblazers is Dr. Frances Osamor, a US-based Nigerian who has made history as the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), Washington, D.C.
Born in Delta State, Dr. Osamor’s journey to this remarkable achievement began with her undergraduate studies at UDC, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. She later pursued and earned a master’s degree at the same institution before shattering barriers with her historic doctorate in 2024.
Currently, Dr. Osamor serves as a senior application systems specialist manager at WMATA. Beyond her professional career, she is also the president of Good Cause Circle, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating positive change in communities.
Her passion for empowering women in technology and beyond has been a driving force in her career. She actively mentors women, helping them overcome fears and societal limitations while encouraging them to pursue careers in STEM fields.
In her own words:
“As a Black woman doctor in computer science and engineering, I am committed to ensuring our voices are heard, our contributions are recognized, and our representation in technology is respected. I will continue to pave the way for future generations, inspiring and empowering others to shape a future where diversity and inclusivity thrive in the tech world.”
Dr. Osamor is currently working on her first book, “Impossible is Nothing,” which will detail her journey, challenges, and the lessons she has learned along the way.
Her story is one of resilience, excellence, and breaking boundaries—an inspiration to young women, Nigerians, and aspiring technologists worldwide.
