The abductors of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, have released a video showing him and his wife while in captivity.
The couple were reportedly kidnapped along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State near Zakin Baure village. Their abduction has continued to attract national attention because of the retired military officer’s profile and service record.
In the video, which surfaced on social media on Saturday, the wife of the retired general delivered a message on behalf of the kidnappers, outlining a number of demands they claim must be met before the couple can regain their freedom.
Among the conditions listed were the release of three individuals identified as Sani, Aminu and Nasiru, who the abductors alleged are currently in detention. According to the message, two of the individuals were arrested in Jikamshi, while another was apprehended in Kano State.
The abductors also demanded the return of livestock they claimed had been seized from them. They appealed to government officials and traditional leaders in parts of Katsina State to help facilitate discussions aimed at meeting the conditions presented.
Speaking briefly in the footage, Abubakar called for peaceful engagement and urged efforts toward dialogue. He suggested that the armed group had indicated a willingness to pursue peaceful coexistence if discussions were properly handled.
Reports also indicate that a notorious bandit leader operating in parts of Katsina State has allegedly opened communication channels with members of the retired general’s family regarding the situation.
As of the time of reporting, neither the Katsina State Government nor security agencies had issued an official response to the video or the demands made by the abductors.
The incident highlights the continuing security challenges facing communities in parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom and other criminal activities remain a major concern despite ongoing security operations.
Authorities are expected to provide updates as efforts continue to secure the safe release of the retired military officer and his wife.
