Manchester City delivered a statement performance in the Women’s Super League (WSL), thrashing Liverpool 4-0 at the Joie Stadium— and it was Mary Fowler who stole the show.
The Australian winger made WSL history by becoming the first player to record at least two goal contributions in four consecutive league games. She assisted both of Khadija Shaw’s first-half goals, setting the stage for City’s dominant victory.
Despite City’s early control, it wasn’t until the 30th minute that the deadlock was broken. Fowler’s pinpoint pass found Shaw, who finished coolly into the bottom-right corner. Just before halftime, the duo combined again, with Shaw doubling the lead.
Liverpool had their chances—Ceri Holland came close in the 18th minute but fired straight at City’s keeper, Rebecca Knaak. However, City never let up. In the second half, Jill Roord hit the post but pounced on the rebound to make it three. The night went from bad to worse for Liverpool when Gracie Prior, making her first league start, scored her first WSL goal with a curling cross-shot into the top-left corner.
City boss Gareth Taylor praised his squad: “The girls executed the game plan really well. We knew Liverpool would be aggressive, but we got forward early and made it count.”
Liverpool’s Matt Beard admitted his side fell short: “We made mistakes. We had chances, but we were too passive. It’s a frustrating night.”
With this win, Manchester City continues their WSL title charge in style, while Fowler cements herself as one of the league’s standout stars.
