President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Chief Edwin Clark, former Federal Commissioner for Information and a revered leader of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum. Tinubu’s heartfelt condolences were shared in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday.
Describing the late Clark as a man of courage and conviction, Tinubu praised his lifelong dedication to serving the nation and his community, noting his significant roles as a councilor, state, and federal cabinet member.
In the statement, Tinubu remarked, “Chief Clark led an illustrious life, marked by service to his country and the Niger Delta region. He was a fierce advocate for resource control, as well as economic and environmental justice for the people of the Niger Delta.”
The President extended his condolences on behalf of the federal government to the family of Chief Clark, the Ijaw nation, the people of the Niger Delta, and the Delta State government, calling the loss “deeply sobering.”
Reflecting on Clark’s remarkable life, Tinubu noted that the late statesman was a towering figure in Nigerian politics for nearly six decades. “Chief Clark was a courageous leader who stood by his principles, unafraid to stand alone against injustice,” he stated. “He spoke for the Niger Delta. He spoke for the nation. His interventions on national issues were always distinct, patriotic, and rooted in justice.”
As a lawyer and educationist, Clark remained committed to a united Nigeria, constantly reaching out to different regions to foster national unity grounded in equity and justice. Tinubu also highlighted Clark’s political acumen, saying his words were never taken lightly by his opponents. “A patriot has left us, but history will remember him as a man who fought tirelessly for the rights of the Niger Delta people, for national unity, and for true federalism,” he added.
The President expressed his hope for divine comfort for Clark’s family, friends, and all those affected by his passing. Chief Edwin Clark’s death was announced on Monday by his family representative, Prof. C.C. Clark.
As Nigeria mourns the loss of this revered statesman, Tinubu’s tribute underscores the lasting legacy of a man who shaped the country’s political landscape and advocated for justice and unity throughout his life.
