Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy’s status remains uncertain after suffering an upper-body injury while playing for Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off. The Bruins are expected to provide an update on his condition Tuesday morning, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.
McAvoy was sidelined for Monday’s game against Sweden and was reportedly admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital for further evaluation. The 27-year-old blueliner had played significant minutes in Team USA’s previous victories over Finland and Canada but had yet to record a point in the tournament.
His absence is a major concern for the Bruins, as McAvoy has been a cornerstone of their defense this season, tallying seven goals and 23 points in 50 games while averaging a team-high 23:40 of ice time. He remains under contract with Boston through the 2029-30 season with a $9.5 million cap hit.
Team USA’s lineup was stretched thin in their 2-1 loss to Sweden, as they were also missing stars Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk due to injuries. Brady Tkachuk was forced to exit in the first period with a lower-body injury, further depleting the squad.
With the 4 Nations final against Canada looming on Thursday, head coach Mike Sullivan remains hopeful that key players will return. “We’ll have to wait and see how things play out, but obviously, there will be contingency planning in the event that we need people,” Sullivan said.
As Team USA prepares for its rematch against Canada, Bruins fans will be eagerly awaiting news on McAvoy’s status and potential return to the ice.
