The Benue State APC Elders’ Forum has thrown its weight behind the resolution of the Benue State House of Assembly calling for the removal of Chief Judge Justice Maurice Ikpambese over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
Speaking at a media briefing in Makurdi over the weekend, the Elders, led by Senator Barnabas Gemade, affirmed that the Assembly acted within constitutional provisions and dismissed concerns over the legality of its decision.
“We have reviewed the circumstances surrounding Justice Ikpambese’s removal, and it is clear that the Assembly followed due process as outlined in Section 292(1)(a)(ii) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended),” the Elders stated.
Citing allegations including the mismanagement of over N666 million in less than a year and unlawful waivers on electoral laws, they maintained that the Chief Judge’s removal was necessary to uphold the integrity of the judiciary in the state.
The forum also commended the Assembly for disciplining lawmakers who initially voted for the Chief Judge’s removal but later attempted to discredit the decision publicly.
Taking a swipe at Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro for seeking the National Assembly’s intervention, the Elders argued that his motion lacked constitutional merit. They emphasized that the Benue Assembly remains functional, with full quorum and effective leadership, making external interference unnecessary.
They called on stakeholders to prioritize unity and constructive engagement rather than political distractions. “Benue must continue on its path of progress, and we remain committed to supporting the state government in achieving its developmental goals,” the statement concluded.
