Pope Francis remains in critical condition as he battles pneumonia in both lungs, the Vatican confirmed on Monday. Despite his serious illness, the 88-year-old pontiff had a stable night and is currently resting at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

The leader of the Catholic Church, who has served since 2013, was admitted on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties. Initially diagnosed with bronchitis, his condition worsened, leading to pneumonia. Over the weekend, the Vatican issued its first warning that the situation had become critical.

Doctors are closely monitoring his health, providing high-flow oxygen therapy. While he remains alert, tests have revealed early signs of mild renal failure, adding further complexity to his recovery. Medical experts warn that his condition could lead to sepsis—a dangerous infection that could spread through the bloodstream.

Professor Sergio Alfieri, leading the medical team, emphasized that the biggest risk now is the infection spreading beyond the lungs. “The real danger is if the germs enter the bloodstream,” he cautioned.

As Pope Francis continues his longest hospitalization since taking office, concerns about his future as leader of the Church have intensified. Speculation about a possible resignation has resurfaced, echoing the historic decision of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI. However, Francis has repeatedly stated that he does not believe the time has come for such a step.

Around the world, Catholics have united in prayer for the pope’s recovery, hoping he will regain his strength to continue his mission.
