The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced plans to shut down Ibadan Airport for six months, starting in early March, to allow for major maintenance and upgrade works.
Confirming the development on X, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, stated:
“Subject to new information, Ibadan airport may be shut down for six months for maintenance/upgrade, starting from early March.”
A Major Upgrade in the Works
The planned upgrade follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval in June 2024 to transform Ibadan Domestic Airport, Alakia, into an international airport.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State reiterated the state’s commitment to the project, highlighting key improvements, including:
Expansion and extension of the runway
General facility upgrades
Construction of a new international terminal (announced in January 2025)
Makinde assured that once completed, the airport will be able to receive international flights, boosting economic and infrastructural development in the state.
What This Means for Travelers
Passengers flying through Ibadan will need to make alternative travel arrangements during the closure, with flights likely redirected to nearby airports like Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
This ambitious project aims to position Ibadan as a key player in Nigeria’s aviation sector, making international travel more accessible for the region.
