The Rivers State Government has responded to reports on the Supreme Court’s ruling halting federal allocations to the state, assuring residents that it will take all necessary steps to safeguard their welfare and uphold the state’s interests.

Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joseph Johnson, made this known in a statement from Port Harcourt, noting that while details of the judgment were still being reviewed, the government remains committed to acting in the best interest of Rivers people.

“We are aware of media reports regarding the Supreme Court’s judgment on Rivers State funds and local government administration. While we await a full legal briefing, we will carefully assess the situation and determine the next course of action that best serves the people.”

Calls for Calm Amid Legal Review

Johnson urged Rivers residents to remain calm and law-abiding as the government seeks clarity on the ruling. He also pointed out that the main issue of defection involving the 27 lawmakers was not part of the Supreme Court’s ruling, as the matter is still pending at the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

“Since the issue of defection was not before the Supreme Court, in their view, Amaewhule and the 26 others are still lawmakers until that matter is decided in court.”

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring that Rivers State’s interests remain protected amid the ongoing legal and political developments.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the state government’s next move—how will Rivers navigate this legal storm to secure its financial and political future?
