Nottingham Forest moved a step closer to their first Champions League appearance in over four decades with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United, thanks to a sensational solo strike by Anthony Elanga.

The 22-year-old winger, sold by United for £15 million ($19 million) in 2023, made his former club pay for their decision as he took the ball from his own half, powered past United defenders, and slotted home a brilliant finish.

The goal not only condemned United to a defeat but also strengthened Forest’s hold on third place in the Premier League. With a comfortable eight-point gap over fourth-placed Chelsea, who still have a game in hand, Forest are closing in on their dream of qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since the 1980-81 season.

Elanga’s masterclass at the City Ground capped off an unexpected fairytale season for Forest, who were only narrowly avoiding relegation last year. The victory is part of an impressive run that has also seen them reach the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time in 34 years.

Despite dealing with fatigue from a gruelling FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton just days earlier, Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s side delivered a solid performance, following his “no excuses” policy.

The win also marked Forest’s first league double over Manchester United since 1991-92, and it was United’s first defeat in eight games across all competitions. Despite a strong start to the season, United continues to struggle with consistency, failing to win back-to-back league matches this term.
