The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to commercial bus drivers, particularly operators of mini buses, popularly known as ‘Korope,’ against violating designated routes and engaging in illegal parking across the state.

The warning was delivered by Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, in an official statement on Tuesday. Signed by Taofiq Adebayo, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the statement reinforced the government’s commitment to maintaining traffic order and seamless vehicular movement throughout Lagos.

Government Vows Tougher Enforcement on Violators

Giwa stressed the importance of strict compliance with traffic laws, particularly concerning unauthorized route deviations. He directed all ‘Korope’ operators to immediately cease using illegal routes, warning that violators would face severe legal consequences.

To enforce this, LASTMA operatives have been instructed to intensify crackdowns on reckless driving and illegal activities that worsen Lagos traffic congestion and disrupt urban mobility. Giwa also condemned the indiscriminate parking and loading of passengers on public roads, emphasizing that such practices heighten traffic gridlock and endanger other road users.

Strict Compliance with Designated Bus Stops and Routes

Moving forward, all commercial bus operators must restrict their activities to designated bus stops and terminals to avoid obstructing vehicular movement.

“Illegal parking and reckless route violations have become a major menace in Lagos, especially due to the unruly behavior of ‘Korope’ drivers,” Giwa stated.

He further highlighted that adhering to designated routes is not just about traffic control but also public safety, as unauthorized detours create loopholes that criminal elements exploit for illegal activities.

With this renewed enforcement drive, the Lagos State Government is making it clear: reckless commercial bus operations will no longer be tolerated.
