Following the tragic murder of John Johnson, a young Igala graduate, by suspected herdsmen in Orozo, Abuja, the police have issued a new directive for all organizations, youth groups, and hiking enthusiasts planning camping or similar outdoor activities to inform law enforcement beforehand.
The 25-year-old Johnson was killed while participating in a camping exercise with his group, the Boys Brigade, on Saturday. In response, the Abuja police have emphasized the importance of notifying the FCT Police Command ahead of any outdoor event, citing rising security concerns.
A statement from the police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, outlined that the FCT Police Commissioner, Ajao Saka Adwale, is urging the public to ensure the police are informed of any planned activities to avoid potential security threats. According to the police, failing to notify law enforcement could expose participants to risks, especially in remote or poorly secured areas.
“We urge organizers and participants to always liaise with the police for security advice, especially regarding safe routes and proper security measures,” the statement read. The police also highlighted the necessity of keeping track of all participants and ensuring their safe return after the activity to prevent incidents like missing persons or accidents.
The police further encouraged the public to utilize emergency contact numbers for guidance or to report any suspicious activities, with the goal of enhancing safety and ensuring a quick response in emergencies.
For inquiries or emergency support, participants are urged to call: 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653, or 08028940883.
