Regular sexual activity may be the key to a longer, healthier life, according to Dr. Adesida Adewumi, a Consultant Family Physician.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Adewumi highlighted the numerous health benefits of frequent intimacy, from boosting the immune system to reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, and even preventing certain diseases.
“Couples who engage in regular sex tend to live longer,” he revealed. “It reduces the risk of stroke, heart attacks, and even certain cancers. For men, ejaculating at least 21 times a month significantly lowers the risk of prostate cancer.”
Adewumi also pointed out that sex acts as a natural pain reliever, helps with weight management, improves sleep quality, and enhances brain function. “It’s like a workout—when done at least three times a week, it helps burn calories and regulates blood sugar levels,” he added.
For mental health, he noted that regular intimacy can reduce depression, anxiety, and irritability, making individuals more productive and emotionally balanced.
Pregnant women also benefit, as frequent sex can lead to easier labor and faster post-delivery recovery. “Sex fosters emotional well-being, strengthens intimacy, and promotes overall happiness between couples,” he said.
However, Adewumi emphasized the importance of safe, committed relationships to minimize the risk of sexually transmitted infections.
“Regular sex, when practiced within a committed relationship, enhances overall well-being and strengthens both physical and emotional health,” he concluded.
So, could the secret to a longer life be between the sheets? Science certainly seems to think so.
