Abia Oil Magnate Chief Obasi Lawson Freed After Month in Captivity

Umuahia – After spending nearly a month in the hands of kidnappers, Chief Obasi Lawson, the Chairman of the Petroleum Retailers Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria and an influential oil magnate, has been freed. Lawson was abducted on March 4, 2025, in a brazen attack in Azunmiri, Ukwa East Local Government Area, Abia State.

At a press briefing in Umuahia, Abia’s Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, confirmed that Lawson was rescued two days ago, adding that he was “hale and hearty” despite his ordeal. However, Kanu declined to provide further details surrounding the rescue operation.

Chief Lawson, also known as SOBAS, was attacked while returning to Port Harcourt after visiting his hometown in Arochukwu, Abia State. His convoy was ambushed by armed gunmen, resulting in the tragic deaths of his driver and one security officer.

The Abia State Police had previously detailed how Lawson’s convoy was ambushed by a dark blue Sienna vehicle carrying the assailants, who opened fire and subsequently abducted him.

Meanwhile, the Information Commissioner also issued a stern warning to traditional rulers and community leaders across the state, emphasizing that any individual caught harboring criminals will face severe consequences. Kanu urged vigilance and encouraged residents to report suspicious activities to the authorities to help curb criminal activities.

In addition to updates on the Lawson case, Kanu revealed that several road projects in the state would soon be inaugurated. These include the Umuahia-Bende road and the rehabilitation of the Isieketa-Obikabia road in Isiala Ngwa South, among others. Additionally, the Umuahia Urban Renewal Project continues to progress, with major infrastructure improvements underway in the state capital.

The Commissioner also reminded citizens that the registration of commercial vehicles is ongoing, with enforcement set to begin soon.
