The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed reports claiming it is set to introduce new N5,000 and N10,000 banknotes, calling them completely false.

In a statement shared on its official X handle on Wednesday, the apex bank warned Nigerians to disregard the viral claims.

“This content is NOT from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Kindly note that the official website of the CBN is cbn.gov.ng,” the statement read.

The clarification comes in response to widespread misinformation suggesting that the CBN planned to roll out higher-denomination notes to ease cash transactions and improve liquidity management.

Some versions of the false reports even quoted a supposed Deputy Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr., alleging that the notes would be introduced on May 1, 2025—an assertion the CBN has now debunked.

As speculation continues to spread, the CBN urges Nigerians to rely only on official sources for accurate financial information.
