Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed that Nigerian defender Ola Aina will undergo a scan to assess the severity of an injury sustained during the club’s thrilling 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

Aina, who has been a key player for Forest this season, was forced off the pitch in the 39th minute of Tuesday’s match at the City Ground, with initial reports suggesting a calf-related injury. Espirito Santo expressed concern over the situation, noting that the defender’s injury occurred without any apparent challenge.

“I cannot say a lot, it’s always a concern when a player gets injured by himself,” Espirito Santo told The Athletic. “We will give him a scan and then see how he looks. I am not quite sure what the precise problem is. The scan will tell us more.”

Aina’s injury led to a tactical shift as Nuno switched to a back five, but the Nigerian was later seen on social media celebrating the win with his teammates, despite using crutches. His absence now casts doubt on his availability for Forest’s upcoming Premier League clash with Aston Villa on Saturday.

Aina, 28, has been one of Forest’s standout performers this season, featuring in all 30 Premier League matches so far. The versatile fullback has scored two goals, provided one assist, and leads the league with three goal-line clearances. His consistent performances have earned him praise from fans and pundits alike, establishing him as an integral part of Nuno’s squad.

Despite Aina’s early exit, Forest secured a historic win over Manchester United thanks to Anthony Elanga’s fifth-minute goal against his former club. The victory marked a significant milestone for Nuno, as he became the first manager to complete a league double over Manchester United since the legendary Brian Clough.

Taiwo Awoniyi also played a crucial role in the victory, starting in place of the injured Chris Wood and helping Forest earn a vital three points in their fight against relegation. The club will now anxiously await further updates on Aina’s injury as they prepare for the weekend’s match against Villa.
