In a landmark moment for the ancient Oyo Kingdom, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to due process, transparency, and non-interference in the selection of traditional rulers, as Oba Abdulakeem Abimbola Owoade I was officially crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.
Speaking at the historic coronation event held at Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo, the governor made it clear that the selection process remained free from political manipulation, despite pressures from some quarters to influence the outcome.
“Some people came to lobby me to install their preferred candidate,” Makinde revealed. “But I asked myself, ‘Is the throne of Alaafin for sale?’ The answer was no. I chose to honor tradition and follow the will of the people and the Oracle.”
A Throne Rooted in Tradition, Chosen by the People
Makinde described the emergence of Oba Owoade as a symbol of resilience, unity, and respect for Yoruba heritage, noting that the outcome was consistent with the decision of the Oyomesi (kingmakers) and the Ifa Oracle, who were both instrumental in the monarch’s selection.
“Today, Oyo stands proud. We have a Kabiyesi who embodies the spirit of our ancestors and represents the will of our people,” the governor added.
Makinde also confirmed that after conducting an investigation into an earlier, controversial claim to the throne, it was discovered that bribery and irregularities were involved, prompting the government to intervene by upholding justice and due process.
Zero Interference Policy for Traditional Institutions
Governor Makinde reiterated his administration’s policy of non-interference in the affairs of traditional institutions, promising to continue playing a neutral supervisory role that upholds cultural values and legal guidelines.
“We stand at the sidelines, not to interfere, but to ensure rules are not broken and traditions are protected,” he emphasized.
Oyo Kingdom Set for Cultural and Economic Revival
The governor also charged the newly crowned monarch to be a pillar of progress for Oyo, noting that the state government will continue supporting efforts to transform the region into a hub of tourism, culture, and agricultural innovation.
Makinde highlighted:
-
The UNESCO-recognized Sango Festival in Oyo.
-
The Old Oyo National Park as a key tourist destination.
-
The Special Agro-Processing Zone (SAPZ) and Agricultural Transformation Centre in Fasola, developed in partnership with the African Development Bank.
“The future of Oyo is bright. This coronation marks the beginning of a new era of development and global recognition,” he said.
Makinde Urges Unity, Warns Against Legal Disruptions
In a clear message to those contesting the monarch’s emergence in court, Governor Makinde urged them to accept the will of God and the people, stating that continued legal battles are a waste of time and would not alter the divine and cultural process already concluded.
“God has chosen for us. Let’s not waste time in courtrooms. Let us unite to support our Kabiyesi for the greater good of Oyo.”
Dignitaries, Royal Fathers, and Global Guests Witness Historic Moment
The grand coronation was attended by top dignitaries, including:

Oba Owoade’s Promise to Oyo People
In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade expressed deep gratitude to Governor Makinde, the kingmakers, and the indigenes of Oyo, promising to serve as a unifying force, protector of tradition, and a catalyst for economic growth and social harmony.
“Together, we will build a stronger Oyo, rooted in unity, tradition, and shared purpose,” the monarch declared.
