As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approaches his second year in office, Nigerians in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) can expect a hands-on presidential presence like never before. According to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, the President will personally commission key development projects, not just in central Abuja, but also in area councils and satellite towns, bringing government closer to the people.
Wike made this announcement while speaking to journalists on Saturday during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects across Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Bwari Area Councils in Abuja.
“At least, the President will visit one of the area councils to commission a project. This is to let the people see and connect with their President, not just commissioning in the city alone,” Wike said.
Satellite Towns Get Spotlight
Wike emphasized that President Tinubu is not only focused on urban development in Abuja’s core city areas but is equally committed to the growth of satellite towns. He added that several roads, including Market Road, Palace Road, and Radio House Road in Gwagwalada, and the A2-Pai Road in Kwali (a 15-kilometre stretch, with 13 kilometres already completed), are being prepared for unveiling.
“Mr. President instructed us to prioritize both the city and the satellite towns. This second-anniversary project rollout proves his commitment to inclusive development,” Wike noted.
He also confirmed that the Ushafa Road in Bwari Area Council, which connects to the War College and surrounding communities, will be completed and ready before the anniversary celebrations.
“These roads will transform daily commutes, reduce travel time to the city, and bring ease to the lives of FCT residents,” Wike added. “Now, you can live in the satellite towns and still access the city comfortably.”
Projects Commissioned So Far
President Tinubu has already commissioned several high-profile infrastructure projects in 2024, including:
-
The Abuja Metro Rail,
-
The 27km Southern Parkway, linking the Christian Ecumenical Centre to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway, and
-
The M18 road infrastructure in Guzape District—named in honor of literary legend Chinua Achebe.
Quality Work and Accountability
Wike praised the contractors working on the projects, noting that they are maintaining high standards and are on track to complete construction before the President’s anniversary.
“The contractors have kept to standards. We are happy with the progress and confident these roads will be handed over soon,” the Minister stated.
