In a monumental step towards reshaping Nigeria’s healthcare system, President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of over 8,800 new Primary Healthcare Centres across the country. Additionally, the government will upgrade existing tertiary institutions to better handle trauma, oncology, and infectious disease control.
Vice President Kashim Shettima shared the exciting news on Saturday during the commissioning of the Sulaiman Adebola Adegunwa Trauma Centre in Sagamu, Ogun State. Shettima highlighted the vital role of the private sector in Nigeria’s health reforms, calling for greater collaboration to address critical gaps in the system.
He revealed that the new Primary Healthcare Centres, alongside upgrades to tertiary institutions, are part of a larger Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria’s healthcare landscape. The initiative also focuses on addressing the rising needs for trauma care, particularly in a rapidly urbanizing nation where industrial risks and motorization are on the rise.
Shettima also lauded the private sector for its contributions to healthcare development, citing the Adegunwa Trauma Centre as a prime example. He emphasized that this facility, built by the Sulaiman Adebola Adegunwa Foundation, aligns perfectly with the government’s vision to overhaul the country’s healthcare system and provide more accessible emergency care to citizens.
At the same event, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun commended the philanthropist Sulaiman Adebola Adegunwa, who donated the trauma centre to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital. The facility aims to significantly enhance emergency care services, addressing trauma-related cases and improving overall healthcare delivery.
The commissioning ceremony also coincided with Adegunwa’s 80th birthday. In his address, Adegunwa spoke of his long-standing commitment to philanthropy, sharing how his deep connection to Olabisi Onabanjo University inspired his donations. The trauma centre is just the latest addition to his many contributions to the community.
The hospital’s management expressed gratitude for the facility, noting that it was designed to provide state-of-the-art emergency medical care and greatly increase the hospital’s capacity to serve the community.
