The Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project, a $2.8 billion endeavor, has achieved a significant milestone, reaching 72% completion, according to Engr. Bayo Ojulari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited. This announcement was made at the 2025 Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum in Abuja, highlighting the project’s progress and potential impact on Nigeria’s energy landscape.

The AKK pipeline, spanning 614 kilometers, will transport natural gas from Ajaokuta in Kogi State to Kano, passing through Abuja and Kaduna. This project is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing Nigeria’s gas pipeline network, meeting growing power demand, and supporting gas-based industries along the route. By providing a sustainable energy solution, the pipeline will also contribute to reducing deforestation rates.

The project’s benefits are multifaceted. Upon completion, the pipeline is expected to generate 3.6 gigawatts of power, supporting gas-based industries and creating over 2,000 jobs, with 1,925 Nigerians employed. Additionally, 61 local contractors have been engaged, boosting the local economy.

Initially slated for completion in the first quarter of 2023, the project faced delays but is now expected to be finished by the first quarter of 2025. This timeline aligns with Nigeria’s energy transition plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2060.

The AKK pipeline project is a significant step towards achieving Nigeria’s energy goals. By investing in infrastructure and promoting sustainable energy solutions, the country is taking concrete steps towards a more prosperous and environmentally friendly future.

As the project nears completion, Nigerians can look forward to the benefits of increased energy access, economic growth, and a more sustainable environment. The AKK pipeline project serves as a testament to the country’s commitment to energy development and its potential to drive growth and progress.
