In a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism, Nigerian military forces have confirmed the elimination of a top ISWAP-linked commander known as Gwaska, along with over 100 insurgents, during a high-stakes airstrike in Katsina State.

According to a statement released on Friday by Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, the deadly operation was carried out on April 10, 2025, by the 17th Brigade of the Nigerian Army in conjunction with the 213 Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Air Force.

“The precision airstrike, based on credible intelligence, targeted terrorist hideouts in Mununu Bakai, Zango, Jeka Arera, Malali, and Ruwan Godiya, areas notorious for bandit activity across Kankara and Faskari LGAs,” Dr. Mu’azu said.

Who Was Gwaska?

Gwaska, identified as the second-in-command to a high-ranking ISWAP leader, was reportedly a key figure in orchestrating attacks across the region. He had recently relocated from Danmusa LGA to Mununu Forest, where he was tracked and neutralized in the coordinated strike.

What Was Recovered?

Security forces recovered and destroyed:

  • Two machine guns

  • Several locally made shotguns

  • Other lethal weapons

This preemptive destruction ensures the weapons cannot be reused by remaining insurgents.

More Successes on the Ground

In a separate operation around Dutsen Wori, near the Dandume-Kandamba Road, a known bandit route, Nigerian forces killed an additional six bandits, including their commander. Multiple insurgents reportedly fled with gunshot wounds. Seven motorcycles were seized, and another four were seen fleeing into the forest.

Notably, no casualties were recorded among Nigerian forces during these operations.

Government Reacts

Governor Dikko Radda applauded the successful operations, emphasizing his administration’s resolve to root out criminal networks in every corner of Katsina.

“With unwavering support from our security agencies and communities, and by the grace of God, peace will return to Katsina and the Northwest,” the Governor declared.

A Strategic Move for Long-Term Peace

Dr. Mu’azu described the operation as part of a broader, sustained strategy to restore peace and security not only to Katsina State but across the entire Northwest region.
