PDP Governors Scramble to Save Party in Explosive Ibadan Showdown

In a dramatic turn of events that could reshape the future of Nigeria’s main opposition party, governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are gathering today (Monday) in Ibadan, Oyo State, for a make-or-break meeting.

Top on the agenda: the political fate of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, party unity, the intensifying crisis in Rivers State, and the bold push for a mega opposition merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The emergency session, convened under the PDP Governors’ Forum, will address the recent Supreme Court ruling that reinstated Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, reversing earlier decisions that briefly installed Sunday Udeh-Okoye in the role.

Despite the Supreme Court’s March 21 judgment, the party leadership has remained silent, fueling speculation about internal divisions. Anyanwu, a known political ally of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, now finds himself at the center of a growing power tussle.

The suspension followed President Bola Tinubu’s controversial declaration of a state of emergency in the oil-rich state, further complicating the PDP’s internal dynamics.

In a bid to chart a course for survival, the governors are expected to weigh the recent proposal by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to merge with other opposition parties. The move, seen as a strategic counterweight to the ruling APC, could drastically alter Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.

Beyond the high-profile cases, the Ibadan meeting will focus on broader issues of party reconciliation, internal unity, and strategic election planning. Party stakeholders believe today’s gathering could mark a pivotal moment in either restoring stability or widening the cracks within the PDP.

Will the PDP Survive Its Identity Crisis?

With mounting legal battles, internal rifts, and external political pressure threatening to split the PDP at its seams, today’s meeting in Ibadan may determine not just who holds power within the party, but whether it remains a viable contender in the race for Nigeria’s future.
