In a major update that’s set to impact millions of Nigerians and users globally, WhatsApp will stop working on older smartphones starting May 5, 2025—a move that could leave countless individuals and small businesses disconnected.

Meta, the parent company behind the popular messaging app, says the decision is part of a broader push to improve security, app performance, and compatibility with modern operating systems.

“As technology evolves, phasing out older hardware is essential to maintain functionality and security,” Meta explained in a statement.

Devices That Will No Longer Support WhatsApp

For iPhone users, any device that can’t upgrade past iOS 12.5.7 is about to be locked out. This includes:

iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus

Meanwhile, Android phones running version 4.4 (KitKat) or older will also be cut off. These include:

Samsung: Galaxy S3, Note 2, Ace 3, S4 Mini
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Moto E (2014), Razr HD
HTC: One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
LG: Optimus G, L90
Sony: Xperia Z, SP, T, V
Nexus 4

If you’re still using one of these devices, it might be time to upgrade. WhatsApp will only function on iOS 15.1 or later, and Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and above.

To avoid being cut off:

Check your device’s OS version
Back up your chat history
Switch to a supported device before May 5
