Community Policing in Anambra: CP Orutugu Urges Locals to Join Fight Against Insecurity
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has called on communities to work together with the police to improve security in the South-East region.
Speaking during a town hall meeting in Awka on Thursday, Orutugu said community collaboration is key to reducing crime and building peace. The meeting was hosted by News Central and brought together traditional rulers, local leaders, security agencies, youth groups, and civil society organizations.
Working Together to Improve Safety
CP Orutugu said many crimes start from small disputes in communities. These include land disagreements, boundary issues, kingship fights, and farmer-herder clashes. If these problems are not solved early, they can lead to violence.
“We need to settle these issues with dialogue and alternative dispute resolution before they turn into crimes,” he said.
He also noted that past teamwork between the police, local businesses, and traditional leaders helped provide important support and intelligence for security operations.
Parents Must Guide the Youth
The police commissioner also talked about the moral decline among young people. He urged parents and guardians to build better relationships with their children and teach them the right values.
“Parents must guide their children and be good role models. This will help stop young people from turning to crime,” Orutugu said.
Fighting Crime Without Attacking Culture
The CP also responded to concerns about the government’s efforts to stop crime. He explained that these actions are not against cultural traditions, but are to stop people from using those traditions for criminal activities.
Other speakers at the event also agreed that community support, regular dialogue, and trust between the people and the police are necessary to keep the region safe.
Everyone Must Be Involved
The meeting ended with a strong message: security is everyone’s responsibility. Participants promised to support peaceful efforts, uphold human rights, and avoid political interference in security matters.
Groups present included the NSCDC, FRSC, vigilantes, traditional rulers, women’s groups, and youth forums across Anambra State.
