The Federal Government has released ₦2.31 billion to federal universities across the country to offset outstanding arrears owed to both academic and non-academic staff.
This was contained in a statement on Thursday by Kamorudeen Yusuf, the Personal Assistant on Special Duties to the President. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, confirmed that the payment was processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and that universities would begin to receive the funds immediately.
Dr. Alausa reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s dedication to transparency and long-term reforms that prioritise staff welfare and ensure financial stability within the education sector.
He further disclosed that the government is in the final stages of releasing all pending third-party deductions and pension remittances to the Nigerian University Pension Management Company.
According to the minister, the administration plans to integrate the Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) into university payrolls by 2026 to promote timely and predictable disbursements. Funding for the *Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities* project, he added, has also been sustained to address infrastructure and resource gaps in tertiary institutions.
Dr. Alausa emphasised that ongoing discussions with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other unions are being conducted in good faith, noting that all agreements will be implemented within realistic financial limits to maintain stability in the university system.
The disbursement comes shortly after ASUU suspended its two-week warning strike following renewed dialogue with the Federal Government.
