Prominent public commentator and activist, Mahdi Shehu, has once again launched a scathing critique of Nigeria’s political landscape, describing it as a system deeply entrenched in greed, deceit, and moral decay.
In a lengthy post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday titled *“DNA Sketching of Political Parties and Other Groups in Nigeria,”* Shehu likened the country’s major political parties to scriptural characters and institutions driven by selfishness and betrayal. He accused the political elite of lacking compassion and integrity, saying their actions have plunged the nation into suffering and instability.
Shehu compared the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the biblical Pharaoh, claiming that the ruling party is dominated by individuals obsessed with power and control. According to him, many of its members embody “terror, greed, deception, and dictatorship,” adding that while a few may be well-intentioned, the majority operate under a “delusional pretense to be God.”
Turning to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Shehu described it as “a congregation of repentant wolves still searching for sheep to devour.” He said the party has become severely weakened and is “gasping for oxygen,” predicting its political demise with “neither an Imam nor a Priest willing to conduct the burial.”
On the Labour Party (LP), the activist accused some of its members of betraying their ideals for financial gain. While acknowledging that there are good people within its ranks, he alleged that “envy, greed, and backstabbing” dominate the party, with several members “already collecting the forbidden fruit of dollars and naira.”
Shehu also described the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a coalition of “strange bedfellows and sworn enemies,” united only by desperation for power. He said the smaller political parties are often a blend of “the good, the bad, and the greedy,” waiting for election season to “cash out” before crying foul when results do not favor them.
Quoting the Bible’s James 4:1–4, Shehu traced the root of Nigeria’s political crisis to the selfish desires and unchecked ambition of its leaders. He lamented that these traits have turned national life into one filled with “suffering, fear, deceit, and a lack of compassion,” concluding that Nigeria’s political DNA remains “a pity, a shame, and a national tragedy.”
