The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a new turn as former Jigawa State Governor and founding member of the party, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has filed a suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop the party’s forthcoming national convention.
The convention, scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, from November 15 to 16, 2025, is expected to produce new national officers who will steer the affairs of the main opposition party. However, Lamido, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, is challenging the process, claiming that the planned exercise violates the party’s constitution and guidelines.
In the suit, and filed through his counsel, Jephthah Chikodi Njikonye (SAN), Lamido asked the court to issue an order restraining the PDP from proceeding with the convention. He also sought an injunction preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising or granting legitimacy to the exercise.
Lamido’s grievance stems from his alleged unlawful exclusion from the race for the position of National Chairman. He told the court that the party denied him access to the nomination form, thereby breaching its own rules and denying equal opportunity to eligible members wishing to contest.
The former governor urged the court to compel the PDP to make the chairmanship nomination form available to him and to suspend any convention activities until he is allowed to participate. He also requested that INEC be barred from monitoring or recognizing any convention conducted in violation of lawful procedures.
Lamido’s suit underscores growing discontent within the PDP ahead of the Ibadan convention, heightening concerns about further divisions within the party as it prepares for key political battles in the months ahead.
