Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has formally announced his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State.

Malami, who said he is determined to confront insecurity and revive the state’s declining agricultural sector, made the declaration during an interview with DCL Hausa on Monday.

He expressed confidence that he enjoys strong grassroots support, although he noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not yet permitted political mobilisation.

“I have agreed to contest, and there is no retreat. God willing, we will win. We will not disappoint those who believe in us,” he said.

Malami criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party of worsening insecurity in the North and failing to protect farmers. He lamented that frequent bandit attacks have forced many farmers off their land, causing a major drop in food production.

He also faulted government policies that he claimed have forced long-standing rice mills to shut down in favour of foreign businesses.

According to him, his governorship ambition is driven by a commitment to “rescue Kebbi State,” restore peace, revamp agriculture and protect the welfare of citizens. He insisted his decision was not motivated by personal interests but by a desire to improve the lives of residents.

Malami resigned from the APC in July and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying his move followed extensive consultations and deep reflection. He stressed that it was driven by concern for Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship, not by anger or personal ambition.
