The countdown has officially begun as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the top three nominees in all men’s categories on Sunday ahead of the highly anticipated 2025 CAF Awards.
The ceremony, which will take place in Rabat, Morocco, on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, will honor the giants, champions, and rising stars who have defined African football over the past year. The event will begin at 7:00 PM local time (6:00 PM GMT) with the entire continent watching.
Men’s Player of the Year: A Star-Studded Three
The race for the Men’s Player of the Year title is drawing the most attention, with three of Africa’s most electrifying talents in contention:
Mohamed Salah (Egypt/Liverpool)
Achraf Hakimi (Morocco/Paris Saint-Germain)
Victor Osimhen (Nigeria/Galatasaray)
All three have had exceptional seasons, making this one of the most closely contested in recent years.
A Legacy of African Greatness
The CAF Awards have a rich history filled with legendary winners.
Ghana’s Abedi Pele is renowned for winning the award three times in a row from 1991 to 1993, while Liberia’s George Weah made history by winning both the African Player of the Year and the Ballon d’Or in 1995.
The record for the most CAF African Footballer of the Year awards is held by:
Samuel Eto’o – 4 titles (2003, 2004, 2005, 2010)
Yaya Toure – 4 titles (2011–2014) and the only player to win the award four years in a row
From the roots of the Ballon d’Or to the most important award in African football
From 1992 to 1999, the award was known as the African Footballer of the Year and was organized by France Football.
CAF officially took over in 2000, changing the name to the African Footballer of the Year, which has since become the most prestigious football award on the continent.
As the football world prepares for the big night in Rabat, one question remains:
Who will be crowned King of African Football in 2025?
