Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Kebbi State to meet with government officials and families of the schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, by armed attackers.

Shettima’s aircraft touched down at the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport, Birnin Kebbi, on Wednesday. He was accompanied by the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, and other senior government officials.

His visit follows a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who tasked the vice president with delivering a personal message to the people of the state and obtaining a detailed briefing on the security situation for onward reporting to the Presidency.

The attack on the school claimed the life of Vice Principal Malam Hassan Makuku, who was reportedly shot while attempting to stop the gunmen from seizing the students.

Police authorities announced on Monday that a joint tactical team had been deployed to the surrounding forest to track the kidnappers and rescue the abducted girls.

President Tinubu condemned the incident and expressed condolences to the affected families. He also postponed his planned trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola—where he was scheduled to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit and the AU-EU Summit—following the attack.
