A serving Police Inspector, Ogbu Clement, and his elder brother, Isawa Ogbu, have been arrested for allegedly mobilising over 50 youths to seize a corpse and attack residents in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident was reported on Sunday by security analyst Zagazola Makama in a post on X.
According to the account, the trouble began on November 28 when Dr. Pius Onwe Odengle, a staff member of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, was transporting the remains of his late mother, Mama Lucy Inogwanya, from Makurdi to Ogyoma Village for burial.
At the Ogyoma Village junction, Inspector Clement—attached to Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja—allegedly blocked the road with a group of youths from Adim Village. The group reportedly vandalised a Benue State Civil Protection Guard vehicle, forcibly took possession of the corpse, and buried it in Adim, claiming the deceased was their aunty.
The following morning, around 9:30 a.m., the inspector and his brother allegedly led the youths back to Ogyoma, where they attacked villagers, destroyed more than 500 plastic chairs, smashed windows and doors, and injured several residents.
Police authorities said the Divisional Police Officer in Otukpo quickly mobilised officers, assisted by troops of Operation Whirl Stroke, NSCDC Agro-Rangers, and the Benue State Civil Protection Guard, to restore order. Photographs were taken for evidence, and the injured were taken to hospital for treatment.
The police confirmed that Inspector Clement and his brother have been taken into custody, while investigations into the incident continue.
