The Benue State Government has announced the domestication of laws designed to protect people living with HIV/AIDS from discrimination and stigmatization. Governor Hyacinth Alia disclosed this during a road-walk awareness event held in support of persons living with the virus. Represented by Deputy Governor Barr. Sam Ode, the governor said the laws, enacted in 2019, were specifically crafted to safeguard the rights and dignity of affected individuals across the state.

Ode reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving access to modern healthcare facilities for HIV treatment and victim support. He commended partners such as the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), international donors and technical organisations for their continued collaboration in combating the disease. According to him, the state considers HIV/AIDS response a top priority and will continue to strengthen partnerships to tackle the scourge.

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Paul Ogwuche, acknowledged the vital contributions of development partners to strengthening Benue’s health sector. He praised Governor Alia for establishing testing centres across the state, encouraging residents to know their status and access available healthcare services.

Dina Doose Aernyi, Chairman of the Shimaveren Support Group Association at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, commended the government for organising the awareness road walk, saying it would help boost public understanding of HIV prevention and treatment. She urged residents who have yet to undergo testing to take advantage of the free, confidential services available. Similarly, Josephine Angev, AHD Champion Lead Facilitator for AFROCAB–UNITAID Save Lives Faster – THRIVE, said the organisation is intensifying awareness campaigns across communities in Makurdi, Gboko, Gwer East and other local government areas. She applauded the state government for establishing HIV/AIDS testing centres in primary healthcare facilities.
