Tensions are rising in parts of Nasarawa State as Tiv communities have filed serious complaints that their rights and a valid court order are being ignored in an ongoing land dispute. Residents of several Tiv settlements claim that, despite a court directive restricting certain actions on the disputed land, these orders have allegedly been disregarded, exacerbating fear and mistrust among the local population.
According to community representatives, the dispute centers on the ownership and use rights to a plot of land long occupied by Tiv farmers and families. It was reported that, in previous court proceedings, an order was granted to maintain the status quo on the land while litigation continued, but the affected Tiv groups now claim that this order is being openly ignored by those they accuse of attempting to seize control of the property.
Residents say the alleged breach has heightened uncertainty, with some families too afraid to return to their farmland for fear of violence or confrontation. Community leaders have called for calm but emphasized that the disregard for the rule of law could inflame ethnic and communal tensions in a region already sensitive to land and resource disputes.
Appeals have been made to local government officials, traditional rulers, and security agencies to intervene and ensure compliance with court orders while the legal process continues. Analysts say the authorities’ response could influence peace and stability not only in the affected communities but also in neighboring areas where similar disputes have previously led to unrest.
So far, there has been no official announcement indicating that the alleged violation has been addressed, leaving many community members feeling vulnerable and uncertain about the future of their land rights.
