The recent imposition of a dusk‑to‑dawn curfew in Ukwonyo Ward, in Ufia, Ado Local Government Area of Benue State by the local government chairman, Engr. Sunny Oche is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting lives and property. (newsbino.com)

At this important moment, it is essential to recognise that lasting peace and security cannot be achieved without the meaningful involvement of our youths. They are not just beneficiaries of safety; they are central partners in maintaining it.

Youth participation is vital for several reasons:

  1. Local Insight and Responsiveness
Young people are familiar with their communities and can provide timely information that supports effective security measures.

  2. Building Cooperation
When youths work together with local authorities and community leaders, trust is strengthened, and solutions are more sustainable.

  3. Positive Engagement
Involving youths in constructive activities encourages them to contribute to community well-being and reduces the likelihood of negative influences taking root.

  4. Harnessing Digital Skills
I encourage all young people in Ukwonyo Ward, and Ufia at large to explore opportunities in the digital world — learning technology and digital skills to improve their lives and contribute positively to the community. Today’s world offers avenues for education, innovation, and entrepreneurship that can uplift both individuals and society.

  5. Sustainable Peace Comes From Within
True security is achieved when communities, including youths, feel empowered to participate in creating and maintaining peace. Experiences from community initiatives across Benue State show that collaborative engagement strengthens long-term stability. (fmino.gov.ng)

I therefore appeal to:

  • Youth leaders and groups to actively participate in local security and peacebuilding efforts while exploring digital opportunities for personal and community development
  • Community and traditional leaders to create inclusive platforms that encourage youth participation in security planning and community initiatives
  • Parents and guardians to support their children in engaging positively with both community security efforts and digital skill development
  • Security agencies to partner with youths in ways that foster collaboration, trust, and transparency
  • Individuals to seek for peace with one another, also forgive one another for peace to reign

Temporary measures like curfews help maintain order, but lasting peace requires a shared commitment from all members of the community, particularly our youths. Let us work together to build a safer, more orderly, and prosperous Ukwonyo Ward, Ufia as a whole, Ado LG, Benue State, Nigeria, Africa  and the world at large.
