After six months of agonizing uncertainty, the skeletal remains of a police inspector who disappeared while on duty in Benue State have been recovered, bringing closure to a long-standing deadlock. Inspector Mohammed Yakubu was reported missing in June 2025 after failing to return from an assignment in the Guma Local Government Area.
For months, his disappearance haunted his family, colleagues, and the security community. Search efforts yielded few results, fueling speculation and fear about his fate. That silence was finally broken when security officers, acting on recent information, combed through a bush near the area where he was last seen and discovered skeletal remains believed to be his.
A joint team of security personnel recovered the remains and carried them out for official procedures, after which they are expected to be released to the family for burial. While the discovery brings a sense of closure, it also reopens old wounds, confirming fears that the inspector did not survive the months he was missing.
Despite his recovery, many questions remain unanswered. How did the inspector get to that isolated location? What happened in the final moments after his disappearance? Were others involved in his disappearance? Authorities have yet to provide all the details, fueling speculation and concern.
The case has once again highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel in vulnerable areas of Benue State. For both residents and officers, it serves as a stark reminder that those tasked with protecting communities often do so at great personal risk, sometimes without clear answers when tragedy strikes.
