Brace yourselves, Scotland—winter is making a dramatic entrance!

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning across much of Scotland, with snow and freezing rain set to cause disruption early Tuesday morning.

Where and When?

Residents in the Central Belt, Tayside, and the Scottish Borders should expect snow flurries starting from 3 AM to 12 PM on Tuesday.

  • Lowland areas could see a light dusting of 0-1cm of snow.
  • Higher ground (above 200m) may get 1-5cm, making for tricky travel conditions.
  • Southern Scotland faces an additional hazard: freezing rain—a rare phenomenon that can turn roads and pavements into dangerous ice sheets.

Travel Disruptions Expected

Drivers and commuters should prepare for longer travel times on roads, buses, and railways, especially in elevated areas. Even treated roads could be dangerously slick, so caution is advised.

What Is Freezing Rain?

Unlike snow or sleet, freezing rain falls as liquid but instantly freezes upon hitting a cold surface, coating everything in a layer of clear, rock-hard ice. This can lead to:
✅ Icy roads & paths—expect treacherous conditions.
âś… Heavy ice build-up on trees & power lines, which can sometimes cause damage.
✅ Beautiful but hazardous landscapes—think frozen windshields, ice-coated branches, and dangerously slick pavements.

When Will It Ease?

The worst of the weather should clear up by Tuesday afternoon, but the morning commute could be a slippery ordeal.

Stay safe, wrap up warm, and if you’re driving—take it slow! 🚗❄️
