Bahrain is seeking a vote at the United Nations Security Council on a revised resolution aimed at safeguarding maritime navigation in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, as divisions among major global powers continue to stall consensus.
The proposed resolution, according to diplomats, calls for measures to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the waterway, which handles a significant portion of the world’s oil shipments. Bahrain, which is leading the initiative, has revised the draft in an effort to address concerns raised by other member states ahead of a planned vote.
The move comes amid heightened tensions linked to Iran, which have raised fears over the security of shipping routes in the region. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, and any disruption has immediate implications for international oil markets and economic stability.
However, the draft resolution has faced resistance from several Security Council members, including China and Russia, who have expressed reservations about provisions that could be interpreted as authorizing the use of force.
Diplomats familiar with the negotiations said these countries are wary of language that might escalate military involvement in the region. France has also reportedly raised concerns over specific elements of the proposal, highlighting the challenge of balancing maritime security with the risk of intensifying geopolitical tensions.
Negotiations have therefore focused on revising the wording to make the resolution more acceptable to all parties.
A diplomat involved in the discussions said Bahrain hopes the revised text will secure broader support, though it remains uncertain whether the resolution will pass given the differing positions among council members.
The outcome of the vote is expected to have significant implications for global energy security, as well as for diplomatic efforts to manage rising tensions in the Middle East.
