In a significant move aimed at tackling the increasing wave of violent crimes in Nigeria, the House of Representatives has called for stringent actions to combat murder, manslaughter, and femicide. The resolution came after a motion was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary session, led by Rivers State lawmaker, Awaji-Inombek Abiante, and supported by three other members.
Supporting the motion, Abiante highlighted the fundamental right to life as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, emphasizing that recent surges in homicide cases, including murder, manslaughter, and other violent crimes leading to loss of life, have triggered widespread public outcry for justice. He further raised alarm over femicide – the deliberate killing of women and girls based on their gender – which has been increasingly prevalent in recent years.
With the motion now adopted, the House urged relevant Federal Government agencies to take decisive action in addressing these crimes. Additionally, the National Judicial Council was urged to establish special divisions within courts at all levels to fast-track the hearing and resolution of homicide, femicide, and related cases.
This resolution underscores the growing concern over the safety and security of Nigerians, particularly women, and calls for swift legal reforms to ensure justice is served.
