UEFA has launched an investigation into Spanish referee José Luis Munuera Montero following his controversial decision to send off Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham during a La Liga clash against Osasuna.
Bellingham was shown a second yellow card just before halftime after reportedly telling the referee, “I am talking to you with respect,” before allegedly muttering “F*** off” as he walked away. Munuera Montero deemed it dissent, leading to an immediate red card, sparking frustration among Real Madrid players and fans.
The English midfielder later clarified that his remark was directed at himself, not the official. Manager Carlo Ancelotti backed Bellingham’s claim, but the referee’s decision stood.
Conflict of Interest Allegations
The controversy deepened when it emerged that Munuera Montero is under investigation by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for potential conflicts of interest. Reports suggest he is the founder of a consultancy and sports management company with ties to La Liga, UEFA, the RFEF, and Atletico Madrid—raising questions about his impartiality.
Due to the ongoing probe, UEFA has suspended Munuera Montero from refereeing duties. If found guilty of breaching regulations, he could face a €100,000 fine and a five-year ban from officiating matches.

Following the match, Munuera Montero became the target of online abuse, including death threats, leading to his omission from the following La Liga matchweek. In response, the RFEF condemned the harassment and highlighted the broader issue of referee abuse.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola also weighed in, urging fans and media to stop the online attacks, emphasizing the need to “leave him alone.”
