In a bold move to tackle security challenges and environmental destruction, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has signed Executive Order 001 of 2025, suspending all mining activities across the state.
Announcing the decision at a high-level stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, the governor said the measure was necessary to curb illegal mining, prevent land degradation, and combat the growing threats of banditry, kidnapping, drug trafficking, and illegal firearms smuggling linked to unregulated mining operations.
“As the Chief Security Officer of the State, I must ensure the safety of our people. Given the rising security concerns associated with illegal mining, we must take decisive action. All mining operations are hereby suspended until further notice. This measure is aimed at restoring order and ensuring that Plateau’s resources are harnessed for the benefit of its people,” Governor Mutfwang declared.
The meeting was attended by traditional rulers, local government chairmen, community leaders, and mining stakeholders. The Gbong Gwom Jos, His Majesty Da Jacob Buba, commended the governor for prioritizing security and pledged the full support of traditional rulers in implementing the ban.
Mining Reform Committee Set Up
To regulate and restructure the sector, the government has inaugurated a technical committee on mining reform, chaired by Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Philemon Dafi.
The committee’s key responsibilities include:
- Verifying mining licences to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Gathering data on mining sites for better resource management.
- Regulating illegal mining to curb security and environmental concerns.
- Designating approved mining zones to prevent encroachment on residential areas.
Governor Mutfwang assured that the suspension was not a witch-hunt but a strategic move to enforce responsible mining and protect communities. He promised to collaborate with the Federal Government, local authorities, and mining companies to develop a structured, sustainable mining framework that benefits host communities.
With mining halted indefinitely, Plateau State takes a crucial step toward safeguarding its lands, resources, and people from the dangers of unchecked extraction.
