Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has honored the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished military officers.
Speaking at the renaming ceremony of Ikeja Military Cantonment to T.A. Lagbaja Cantonment on Friday, Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the move was more than just a name change—it was a profound statement of respect, gratitude, and recognition of Lagbaja’s courage, sacrifice, and service to the nation.
“This cantonment has long stood as a symbol of bravery, discipline, and patriotism. Naming it after Lt. Gen. Lagbaja is a fitting tribute to a leader whose life embodied these values. He dedicated over three decades to safeguarding our nation through counter-insurgency operations, internal security efforts, and peacekeeping missions,” the governor stated.
Sanwo-Olu called on Nigerians to emulate the late general’s patriotism, courage, and discipline. He noted that the renaming of the cantonment sends a strong message to the armed forces and future generations—that Nigeria honors and celebrates its heroes not only in times of war but also in times of peace.
“Our administration has maintained a strong partnership with the Nigerian military, supporting security initiatives, infrastructure, and welfare programs. This renaming is a continuation of our commitment to acknowledging the sacrifices made by our military personnel,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu also extended gratitude to the Nigerian Army and the Ministry of Defence for the initiative, reaffirming the importance of celebrating national heroes as a source of inspiration for the armed forces and the country at large.
Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, who served as Chief of Army Staff from June 2023 to November 2024, was appointed by President Bola Tinubu. He passed away on November 5, 2024, at the age of 56 after a brief illness. His legacy, now cemented in the renamed cantonment, will serve as a lasting reminder of his dedication to national service.
