Nigerian-American NFL star Morotoluwa “Moro” Ojomo is bringing his passion for sports back home, unveiling plans to establish a sports academy in Nigeria to nurture young athletes.
Fresh off his Super Bowl victory with the Philadelphia Eagles, Ojomo touched down in Lagos on Wednesday alongside his family, ready to give back to the country that shaped him.
During a meeting with Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Ojomo emphasized his commitment to empowering Nigeria’s youth through sports.
“The goal is to create an academy that not only promotes Nigerian-born athletes overseas but also helps local talents develop their skills and strength,” he shared.
Beyond the academy, Ojomo is also backing flag football initiatives in Nigeria, with hopes of seeing Nigerian teams compete at the 2028 Olympics.
Recognizing the sport’s growing interest, he highlighted ongoing tryouts in Lagos and the need to equip young athletes with opportunities to thrive.
Reflecting on his journey, Ojomo credited his Nigerian upbringing for shaping his resilience and success.
“I wouldn’t be here without Nigeria. The grass isn’t greener elsewhere—it’s greener where you water it. We have the chance to water it here,” he said.
Dabiri-Erewa congratulated him on his Super Bowl triumph and announced that the Nigerian government would honor him for his achievements. She also invited him to share his inspiring journey at Nigeria’s Diaspora Day event on July 25.
Born in Lagos in 2001, Ojomo moved to the U.S. at seven, but his heart remains tied to his roots. Now, he joins the ranks of other Nigerian-born NFL champions, such as C.J. Uzomah and Charles Omenihu, proving that Nigerian talent knows no bounds.
