Lagos Police Set the Record Straight: Viral Video Suspect Arrested for Drugs, Not Dreadlocks

The Lagos State Police Command has debunked claims that a man seen in a viral video being forcefully arrested was targeted for his dreadlocks, clarifying that he was apprehended for alleged drug possession.

Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin addressed the controversy via his X handle (@BenHundeyin) on Monday, calling the claims “false, misleading, and malicious.”

The viral clip sparked outrage after a voice in the background alleged that officers manhandled the suspect simply because of his hairstyle and appearance. However, Hundeyin set the record straight, explaining that the arrest took place at Bassey Street in the Egbeda area following complaints from residents about young men openly selling and abusing drugs.

“The police responded, and the young man was indeed caught with hard drugs. Due to his resistance and struggle, minimal force was used to subdue him,” he stated.

He further confirmed that the suspect, along with others arrested during the operation, will be prosecuted accordingly.
