Popular Nigerian socialite Darlington Akporugo’s fairytale life came crashing down just weeks before his wedding after he was arrested in the United States for orchestrating a $3 million romance scam.

Akporugo, 47, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy, admitting to defrauding dozens of victims—many of them elderly—by luring them into fake online relationships and manipulating them into sending money.

According to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei, Akporugo and his accomplices used social media to build trust with their victims, posing as wealthy entrepreneurs or professionals in distress. Once the victims were emotionally invested, they were persuaded to invest in sham businesses, cover fabricated emergencies, or even purchase luxury items on his behalf.

Authorities say the scheme spanned multiple states, from Chicago to Kentucky, and involved over 25 victims who collectively lost millions. Some were even tricked into opening lines of credit in Akporugo’s name.

“Romance scams are devastating, with victims often losing their life savings,” Ganjei said. “We urge those affected to come forward, as sharing their experiences can help stop future scams.”

Now facing up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine, Akporugo is set to be sentenced on June 6. He remains in custody until his court hearing.
